) My answer: I agree because ethics come from common sense, empathy, and symmetry(also known as natural law). Thus the most ethical society is open with harm avoidance and reciprocity. And that culture would have been derived from tradition, risk analysis, and skin in the game. And thus derived from firstly metaphysics, secondly epistemology, thirdly aesthetics, fourthly ethics, fifthly morality and finally politics. The reason "utopias" don't work is that humans don't operate that way. You grossly underestimate the determination of "need" and the fact that most people won't accept someone else's definition. It may be unfortunate that there is not a simple solution - or any solution to the innate avarice of humanity.
Steven Cooke I think that needs are objective because it is possible to discuss subjective matters objectively. I never mentioned a utopia but rather negative utilitarianism which would guide an open society to sustainably reduce suffering as much as possible.
You see, we already encounter differences in some definitions or conceptions of definitions in a friendly discussion! Without a real agreement in understanding and fact of concepts like "needs" you'll never successfully move on to even more contentious issues like distribution and equality to "meet" those needs!
Before one attempts to model a larger society, we should examine what we are doing in our personal and local environment. I should be demonstrating my professed lifestyle preferences before suggesting that others adopt a similar one.
