The issue of who actually rules the world remains constant. Some believe that one or two families are very rich and well-established. Some state that hegemon is governed. According to some, secret and ancient organizations govern. According to some, sovereign states do not confuse anyone with their sovereign authority. Explanations of events (or situations) that invoke a belief in conspiracy are—much as other explanations—driven by three primary motives: (1) epistemic (understanding one’s environment); (2) existential (being safe and in control of one’s environment); and (3) social (maintaining a positive image of the self and the social group). That said, unlike other theories, conspiracy theories find reinforcement in circular reasoning and so resist falsification: this is because both evidence against a particular theory and the absence of evidence to support it end up being re-interpreted as proofs of its veracity; hence, conspiracy theories are (or become) a matter of faith.
