Solar panels are typically installed on the roof. A typical house consumes at least a kilowatt, so few solar panels should be enough to power your needs.
Small wind turbine may be installed to power a home, but it is ugly and make a lot of noise. Local laws and zoning regulations may outright forbid it.
In terms of energy savings the most suitable renewable-based technologies of applicability at the household context should be the PV panels and the combined heat and power (CHP) units, being operated at the neighborhood region while supplying power to buildings and hot water for heating or cooling. In terms of advancing the "green sustainable development" at the household context, composting and recycling should be also considered feasible and "environment-conscious" choices. Geothermal fields and reserves are also locally-exploitable renewable energy sources.
Making a solar panel for less than 100$ as advertised by DIY (Do It Yourself) Energy.
I am trying it out to see if I could do it. It is supposed to be for a person without technical background. If it succeeds, one can keep adding more panels as many as you want.
Of course, one can buy a solar panel, but it will cost you several thousand dollars. The idea is to make accessible to all people.
