We are interested in the topic "improvement of sustainability in supply chains through regulation." Here we first have a political process resulting in a regulation (e.g. emission standard), then a supply chain assessing this standard (e.g. producing specific products, changing logistics system etc.). I would like to understand better the "political" part of this. I appreciate everybody's share of ideas about good models, theories, or concepts.
An opportune question, for which I also would like to have answers.
May be this is also a topic for the "pure" political science, and for political sociology.

Just to get your question right: you are looking at regulation aiming at environmental sustainability? Your example points that way. Or are you looking at the implementation of those regulation which could be seen as constraints - to use a Rational Choice term?
I am looking for a theoretical lense or framework for the process how political (sustainability) regulation is formulated and implemented.
(e.g. EU is formulating directives on "green" issues, nations are formulating OR NOT using national action plans)
Rational Choice, public or social choice is o.k., but I search for something alternative - if there is any. Samer mentioned World Society theory. Maybe you Oliver have another idea?
Outside strict Political Science or economic theories, I value Giddens' Theory of Structuration for offering a broad, interdisciplinary theoretical framework. It may require, however, good insight into politico-economical and political thought at individual national level, and an inter-disciplinary inclination to be applied in sustainabilty regulation issues.

Parts of this approach do use Rational Choice approaches, like the analysis of decision-making processes in committees.

Diogenes, you are right. Most textbooks on public policy or policy-making include public interests, public opinion or other ways of subjective influences on a rather low level. The connection between the public and policy makers is a different subject and there are, to my knowledge, no definite explanations on whether there is a link and how the causalities run.
