We tested 20 subjects from 2 species in an arena with two separate sides and recorded the number of transitions each individual made from one side to the other in both control (both sides light) and a treatment (light and a dark side) trials using a repeated measures design. Individuals typically made 1-4 transitions with 1 transition meaning that they moved to and stayed in the dark side. Which statistical test is appropriate to find out whether the number of individuals making 1 transition is significantly higher in the treatment than in the control trials? And to compare between species whether one tended to stay in the dark significantly more?
