I want to compare the customers current experience to their desired experience. I have used the Mann-Whitney test however I am not sure if this is for two populations. (this is for my undergraduate dissertation). Thanks
If your data are ordinal, then the test you might use is the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test. An awful mouthful. I really believe we might just call it the WoMPSeR, which sounds more fun, almost something that the Moomins might use.
Emily Blaxill, the Wilcoxon matched-pairs signed-rank test could, indeed, be a good choice for you. However, if you were to use that test, you would need to be able to match the data for each participant's current experience with their data for their desired experience.
I expect that wouldn't be difficult to do (despite the limited amount of information you've provided about the nature of your study design), but it might depend on the nature of your data. You might be able to get additional good advice if you provided some more information. For example, how did you measure current and desired experience?
