Simple hydro-distillation in a Clevenger trap will yield essential oil but some of the early boiling components may be lost. Thank you Dr. Rao. In fact, my Post-docs are working on antimicrobial activity of those oils. We have commercial samples from Sigma but I do prefer to compare with lab prepared oil.

It is always a good idea to produce your material and work with them. I am sure you are aware of the variations in essential oil profiles of aromatic plants and spices caused due to several factors. To compensate for it, you may produce the oils in different seasons and check their activities.

I spend 10 years in garlic ,i used all methods during Msc,PhD,through studying effect of irradiation on volatile oils of fresh garlic.,by using the best one using vapor of boiling water in separated big flask ,then these hot vapor must go to another flask containing grinding fresh garlic ,but the the edge of vapor tub must down contact the bottom of flask, to boil all crushing garling to  releas with oils through tub which raise near more surfac of mixture ,then the edg under water because th garlic oil density more than watr to perciptated as yellow or amber color,all equipment mut compact,this introduce natural garlic oil pure.

HI jasim; I had similar experience about garlic oil preparation using steam distillation in my past  labs. The condenser must be cold enough and the container of distillate  must be surround with ice-water. I obtained yellow garlic oil at the bottom below water condensate. 

 Thank you. I purchased one from SIgma but unfortunately it did not show any antimicrobial property although many papers claim it has. Do you have any idea where can I get good quality garlic oil.

Jasim, I guess that the Sigma product of garlic oil has no antimicrobial  allyl sulfides left, The might be vaporized during its storage and transportation. . The  product has to be fresh and  kept refrigerated. Maitree

The best one if you like the original garlic oil(OGO).first you must knew that  OGO,the only oil density more one ,i.e droped in bottom of flask not like other oil in surface of water.Using steam extraction only can produce VIRGIN OGO. bUT ALL SOLVENT WILL DESTROY OIL ,esp that allicine content in all oil can produce at high pecentage. Thses ,solvent are easy to use as ether,alcohol .better to use fresh steam vapor inside the grinding or crushed garlic cloves free skins  with water .During steam ing process after few minutes ,the OGO WILL APPEAR AT BOTTOM  OF FLSK.THIS NEED  ADABTED GLASS APPARATUS TO GET.

Hi all, I am doing an experiment of garlic essential oil extraction by MAE. I am using feed stock 100g and now varying the ratio of solvent ethanol: water. However the yield was low and sometimes even no yield. Can anyone give me some guide?

 Hi Yii Ivy: To get good yield of  garlic oil, you must control temperature at  all steps during preparation : garlic clove grinding > mixing with solvents, distillation at  or near zero degree C. > garlic oil. This  oil  easliy vapors and oxidized.

Alternatively,  DO NOT use any organic solvent,ethanol which are not necessary for  garlic oil extraction, since during removing the solvent, all garlic  essential oil vaporized, no remaining oil., So you must use only water in the extraction, water and oil can be separated during the distillation.

ALL FRIENDS ,MY COLLEAGUES ,I THINK MUST USE FRESH STEAM WATER IN CLOSED SYSTEM TO GET YELLOW OIL IN BOTTOM OF GLASS.MUST PREPARE FRESH CLOVES,REMOVE OUTER DRY SHELVES,THEN GRIND THE CLOVES WITH SUITABLE VOLUME FOR FEW SECONDS ,THEN TRANSFER TO FLASK(5 LT OR BIG LITTLE ),START EXTRACT TO RECEIVE FRESH VAPOR,GRADUALLY FEW YELLOW OIL DROP IN THE BOTTOM .IF YOU CHECK THAT OIL BY GAS CHROMATOGRAPHY ,YOU WILE FOUND ANOTHER ONE BY SOLVENT EXTRACTION as sigma oil .this the crude oil by long experience.GC ANALYSIS BY MY SELF PROVED 45 COMPOUNDS ,ANTIMICROBIAL,ANTICANCER.

Use steam distillation method but add a carrier-oil to trap the oil. The oil is very volatile and has a high degree of miscibility with water, hence carrier-oil is necessary.

Garlic oil is a volatile oil that can be extracted by simple alcohols such as ethanol, propanol, and butanol.

It was shown that among different solvents used, the butanol extracted samples showed the highest inhibitory effect against B. cereus, Erwinia carotovora, and other microbes.
