The better is ARToolKit. But you need other software apps in order to draw or to develop the 3D models.

Its depend on what purposes, . . .

1. 3D object tracking:

- Metaio SDK: it could track 3D object using NFT

- Vuforia SDK: could track 3D simple object , like simple box

2. 2D object tracking

Vuforia SDK: can track almost all image in the world (read natural feature tracking) markerless. Good for book, ads, smartphone.

ARtoolkit: the first ARmethod in the world, that track the fiduciary marker(marker with black and white shape). Good for research only

Openspace3D: support both

for me i prefer Vuforia SDK, . . :)

ARToolKit is widely used for research purpose.. but limitation is black and white border however ARToolKit plus support marker less tracking. Vuforia SDK support wide range of tracking. such as feature tracking, cylinder tracking, word tracking etc. and detection is fast. and vuforia developer portal is very helpful. I prefer Vuforia SDK. best of luck for your research.

I recommend Metaio SDK also with 3D model tracking (but not only) - free with watermark. Vuforia SDK is also a good choice.
