As a PhD student in paleontology, some fossil specimens may not be accessible and only visible via pictures from publications.
In order to perform some analysis (such as linear morphometric (PCoA)) on these specimens without having the chance to see them with my own eyes, my question is: which software is interesting to use to take measurements via pictures ? (with a scale on the photo).

I would definitely recommend ImageJ, it is free and widely used so there is lots of tutorial and help online.

You can measure length but also area, angles, etc.

Hello, an easy way would be to use the measurement function of a PDF program (e.g. Adobe Acrobat Reader or PDF Editor Exchange). To do this, save the image as a PDF beforehand or use a PDF printer.
You could use Motic Image. Moderate prices for automatic measurements

It names FIJI now. It is very useful and free software not only for measuring but also for editing of photos
For my own work I have used imageJ and I was happy with it and could get all I needed from both photos of specimens and thin sections.
