Working with Transgender people is a difficult research. However, many researchers have done a variety of research on these people. Some have used the probability sampling methods while others have used the non-probability sampling methods and some have used mixed methods. In this regard, which sampling method would be best for the study of Transgender migration or the study of suicidal behaviour of Transgender population?
Para el estudio del fenómeno de la migración en el grupo poblacional transgénero, se pueden utilizar enfoques cualitativos y diseños fenomenológicos hermenéuticos cuando el problema se orienta a consultar estereotipos de genero, creencias, percepciones, representaciones sociales.
En el caso que se busque identificar aspectos sociodemográficos y caracterización de la población se puede utilizar enfoques cuantitativos y diseños descriptivos.
También se pueden utilizar los enfoques mixtos si la investigación pretende indagar sobre el mundo de la vida y experiencias vividas como perfiles sociodemográficos.
Snowball sampling technique will prove helpful to identify and select those transgenders who have migrated and may be also helpful for identifying those transgenders who have suicidal behaviour/ mental health issues through their transgender friends. `
The research method would depend on the area of study and the visibility of transgender individuals or communities in that area. For my study with the transgender individuals in Kerala, India, I had a key informant who has been working with the transgender community who introduced me to the individuals. I followed a Life History Method with my research participants in which our interactions were conversational. The research participants shared few concerns they had about engaging with researchers.They felt that there is a tendency for researchers (they had engaged with) to use questionnaires which ask Yes/No questions or scales that are skewed and essentially delegate every transgender person to be "mentally unstable" when taken out of context! This could be considered a demerit of relying on only quantitative methodologies to depict the lived experiences of marginalised communities.
Desde el enfoque cualitativo, para el abordaje de estudios con población transgénero es pertinente el muestreo en cadena o bola de nieve: se orienta a la comprensión de realidades culturales o personales en el anonimato por las condiciones de marginalidad del orden social o culturales. La clave esta en encontrar un caso perteneciente al grupo objeto de estudio y este lleva al siguiente Patton (1988), en Sandoval (2002). Así como El muestreo por conveniencia tiene su origen en consideraciones de tipo práctico en las cuales se busca obtener la mejor información en el menor tiempo posible, de acuerdo con las circunstancias concretas que rodean tanto al investigador como a los sujetos o grupos investigados..
