Young children might use a touch screen to recognize (not to identify its specific use) a familiar icon, picture or symbol. Can they generalize the use of this icon or symbol to expand a skill or knowledge is the question? It might have utility in a "first" - "then" behavioral process. If it aids in communication, it might serve a behavioral and language need to make a child available for learning.

I probably cannot contribute anything scientific to this discussion, but I made an interesting observation a while ago:
When visiting friends at their home, their little daughter tried to apply touch screen technology (which she knew from the smartphone) to their TV. It did not work, because the TV had no touch screen technology. She was totally surprised that it did not work, but she had made a good transfer from the little screen on the smartphone to the big TV screen, which I thought was a great generalization. She was about 2 years old at this time.
