Dear all, I like to discuss which research design can fit to which type of research focus. Lets discuss it in broad and see, how many different designs we can find around the "globe" between qual / quant, mixed data; technical, natural science, social science and philosophical topics. I hope to find more design types that way. I start with the following three:

1. Approaches:
a. Qual: narrative; phenomenology; grounded theory; Ethnography;
b. Quan:
c. Mixed methods research: (QUAL+QUAN)-sequential; (QUAL+QUAN)-Concurrent
2. Data collection methods:
interview; focus group; documentary; experimentary; secondary data
There are three major research designs: quantitative, qualitative and mixed designs. Research design depends on research question. Research questions depend on what you want to investigate in your variables or what you want to determine in the research topic to be investigated. The research design is the overall plan for answering the research question.

Qual, quan and mix just concernes the data type, I'd like to find more study designs ...

I think that we can add Action Design Research (ADR) to the designs listed in the site you posted.
A good reference for ADR is: Sein et al. (2011), Action Design Research, MIS Quartely, 35(1), 37-56.
Personaly, I did some research following the action research approach and I fout it a very valuable option when you have: a problem raised from the field, a good access to the organization where the problem needs to be solved, a theoretical framework to use for solve the problem, and( the most important thing) an oportunity to learn something from your intervention. The last is the difficult part. It is important to consider well all the possible contributions to learn during the interventions, if we do not do that, we cannot differentiate our research from a consultancy intervention.
In my experience, almost all the data we collect in Action Research was qualitative.

Cool, I forgot about that. I agree, Action research design is definitively an important one. Also agree about your emphasise, when you made a change in - eg an organisation, then you need to make sense out of it and validate and evaluate it (similar to design science). I conducted one research mixing design science with action research, so this is cared of.
