I have a variable whose distribution is skewed to the right a bit. In addition to evaluating it on the continuous scale after log transformation, I hope to divide into quartiles for a more clinically relevant analysis. Is there a way to decide whether teritles are better than quartiles or quintiles? If I divide into quartiles to begin with, is there anything that can help indicate if my association will be stronger if I divide into tertiles?

Thanks very much.
