Historically, Willow bark (Salix) was used for its anti-inflammatory properties, which later resulted in isolation and synthesis of pure compound salicylic acid. Bioactive compounds such as xanthones, and mangostins isolated from the fruit hulls of Garcinia mangostana exhibited anti-inflammatory effect by blocking inducible Nitric Oxide Synthase (iNOS) and Cyclooxygenase-2 (COX- 2) expressions. Geniposide, a major irioid glycoside isolated from the fruit showed significant inhibition on 5-lipooxygenase. Genipin, another compound identified from the plant believed to inhibit acute inflammation by blocking Cyclooxygenase-2 expression. Genipin and Geniposide both markedly decrease the content of nitrite. Likewise, there are so many plants pharmacologically investigated for their efficacy in the treatment of RA symptoms.

topical arnica is decent in relieving joint pain, though some will have issues with skin sensitization - most data are from OA, not RA, but as symptomatic relief in mild cases, not so bad.
