I think,  it is good idea to list all your publications on the research gate. So we are giving a choice to the user about what s/he wants. The question is not about listing my best, but the best from the user's point of view. There are hundreds of people who are searching material. You never know who would find your ordinary paper as the best discovery from her/his point of view.  

Dear Marcel, ResearchGate supposed to be a (heaven) Gate to Research, so It would be a nice place to find all we need. Accordingly, I am in favor of All-in-One attitude, although our publications are listed in various databases (Google Scholar, Scopus, WOS, etc.)  Listing all publications in chronological order is good while we are visiting RG's member profiles. Please note many of RG members are students and young researchers looking for research topic, ideas, state-of-art, ... so if they can find all their needs in one place like RG it would be much faster/safer than searching days and days in Internet to get/find valid sites which can provide them with free access to millions of articles, thesis, datasets, etc.

It depends on each author's attitude, we cannot make a general rule that fits everybody. Probably someone wants to promote now an aspect of his/her research activity, so he/she makes public the relevant papers. Somebody else would probably want to make a full list, it depends to the author I think.

Perhaps many ('poor') students do not have access to the web-sites that are protected by universities, journals, governmental organisations...., and therefore will have biased vision of the existing literature.

In my opinion, a concise list of your interests & publications is sufficient. This site is having participants who can follow each other or send messages to each other in an open way. It is a real research gate which opens the gate wide for exchange of ideas. I have received many messages from younger researchers than me & I gave my suggestions to them hoping that I contributed some advantage to someone who needed it. I am very pleased that I received a number of messages telling me that the ideas worked. This is one of the best aspects of RG, in my point of view. 

There is of course also the option to present the full publication list as a data set 

I think it's a nice idea to "have everything in one place", as somebody described it. I look for articles on ResearchGate quite often, especially when I'm working from home. Even at work I don't have access to all data bases, and all journals. In my case the access to some older papers is sometimes  limited. Hence I find it very useful to have an option to find them on ResearchGate.

Recently a reviewer asked me to cite a paper, I couldn't find it, and although the author was on Research Gate he had not added this paper. So I had to write him personally and ask for pdf.

I think the goal of RG is to get all researchers involve and interact by their research publication first. Otherwise why we are involved in it?

I think publications are often very focused, not expressing ideas about general education or research practices that can be applied to any research domain. I therefore do not think that publications always come first in such discussions expressed via questions/messages.

RG provides an opportunity, a choice possibility. Participants have the right and can select of a given supply. This may be a luxury but should be this luxury provided for each of us.

List of research topics may be a history of a person. It may be right that s/he does not deal with some of them but hopefully some knowledge and experience remained of them. I feel these old topics may be an “antécédent” necessary or imaginative.

All these information can characterise a person with his/her advantages and disadvantages. The essence is to know, to approach each other.

Dear Palani, Good idea. Likewise I put full-text of all of my papers and conferences except those with copyright  issue.

A good thing with RG that is not available by WOS or Scopus is that it is updated by members not only with their printed papers but also with papers that has been presented online in an early view version before print publication by various journals. However, WOS and Scopus are updated (made available) for printed papers but do not include online early view versions.

In other words, why changing a system A by a system B, when system A is efficient?

I find that the publication history of a person allows valuing their RG discussion comments.

The posting of all publications is a start to open publication. I would encourage open discussion of publications to further the science and understanding of one's work and interest. My concept of open publishing is that each publication is a living document allowing updating, correcting, and additional cross referencing.

One should upload all of his publications/books/papers because a lot of people are looking for data and research gate is one of the few platforms where you can easily get what you want or you can request humbly from the author.

It's so difficult to download my publications, which were not published  in English. They were published in MSU (Moscow)and other serious universities, federal special journals and sites. But there are no on-line versions of these international conferences and collections.And they wrote "not supported".Why? All of them have ISBN.

Freedom is perfect, let people list the publications they want, as long as they are correctly identified, which is of their ultimate responsibility. Freedom and responsibility must be a winning trade.
