my point of view Strategic is top level managers are said to performing role but Traditionally, the role of top level managers has been to set overall direction by formulating strategy and controlling resources. But now, top managers are more commonly called on to be not only strategic architects but also true organizational leaders.
what to all say?????
Top level managers are strategists, mentors, humanists, guides and above all visionary team leaders, who facilitate the team members to synchronize the organizational goals with that of personal goals and motivate to achieve the same through commitment and team spirit.
Managers are followers at every levels and the one who invested money is the leader. he/she always show directions to managers at every levels. At different levels of management they are bound with some responsibility and they have authority to execute these responsibilities. I have a very interesting story on it. some other time i`ll detail it.
I am not a management guru. Neither I claim to be a top level manager. How ever I take this opportunity to share my experience. I served in PIA first as manager and then as general manager for 22 years. During this period unlike many others I completed all projects successfully and with a touch of excellence. The three traits underlying my success were as follows.
1- Vision: I studied copiously and based on my studies developed in my mind a vision of things to come and how I can develop my team and infrastructure to be second to none.
2- Team Building: Without a team nothing can be achieved. I developed string team and effective communication mechanism. If there is no communication, there is no team
3- Strategy: In PIA on average we had change of CEO every two and half years. This combined with revenue fluctuations, necessitated a sustainable strategy to achieve the objectives.
I may be totally wrong but based on my experience above three performing roles are necessary ingredients for managerial success.
In my opinion, definitely responsibility of senior managers is related to the planning and control. Their mission is to guide and monitor the organization to ensure its survival in the long term. What is happening in the postmodern era, is that organizations need to be warmer. The people of Generation X claims to be treated as human beings and not as disposable resources. That is why senior managers have changed their style of leadership to look closer to the people. Today, we cannot manage in solitude since the hill, the worker has to know, that he is part of the team, and that's why senior management, adapting to the times, develop a more fluid communication.
@Jazmin Diaz · Very well said. You have to treat your subordinates with due respect and go an step further to at times if possible assist them if they face any problem. This way they become loyal to you. Ethics dictate that as a manager you must own your decisions even if some thing goes wrong.
Top Managers main job is to secure the future of the firm; make its operations sustainable. In the present VUCA world, many companies which were in Fortune 500 list are dropping out like potatoes. This is on account of top managers not understanding changes in the environment and thus fail to take proper decisions for securing the future.
They need to stop to work as functional heads, inculcate habit to look into future and create strategies to sail in the turbulent waters, thus, securing future. This needs visioning, strategising, leading as well as acting.
Top Managers or senior executives are supposed to be visionary people, they must see where others cannot see and lead the team there. They are strategic thinkers and should as much as possible avoid micro-management which can consume much of their time. A good top manager creates the way, shows the way, and walks the way. Above all top managers should create and work through teams for successful implementation of the organizational goals.
Based on my personal experience. A top level manager has to understand organizational culture and constraints. These vary from country to country and in developing world from organization to organization.
In addition to that a top level manager must be cognizant of opportunities and threats posed by technology advancement and local and international political atmosphere.
