You may try isomerisation of a hydrocarbon /trans-alkylation etc.

I think you may try oligomerization (exactly of alpha -methylstyrene) in laboratory batch reactor. Synthesis of cyclic dimer says about presence strong bronsted acidic sites. Synthesis of linear dimers says about presence in catalysts, lewis acidic sites. GC analysis is required.
