While many countries are in phased lockdowns, universities have been challenged with moving learning content and material in an online format to their respective learning management systems (LMS). These LMS's usually have built-in tools for email, chat, blogs, forums etc.
Many educators have been creative and have created other shared platforms to encourage participation. For example, I have had successful weekly check-ins with my postgrad honours students on our Whatsapp group. Which methods have you been using? How are you experiencing the communication levels of students? Which advice do you have for encouraging active participation?
Zoom is very effective simple and interesting but students can control not answer my question this is a problem.

Dear all, thank you for your responses - it seems that Zoom is definitely the winner during this time - I have not used it yet and will look into it. Will also review the other tools mentioned, thanks! Whatsapp seems to work best with my students at the moment - but I think this might be because they are postgrad students.
I've seen that Google has made Google Meet available for free now - and that you can have as many as 100 people in the same meeting. Has anyone tried this tool yet?
The communication via email, Zoom, and discussion forum in Moodle is not always clear, so I have to always repeat with clarification.

My main tools for virtual classes and consultancies: the Zoom platform, Hangouts, and the Virtual Classroom of my institution. For quick communication, the social networks WhatsApp and Facebook. Regarding document exchange or evidence portfolio: Google Drive and email. For the design of tasks, I rely on Web Quest structures to explain in detail the task, the process, the resources, and the evaluation of the activity.
More than half of my students have problems mainly with internet coverage because they now live in the COVID-19 quarantine in their populations of origin, which are located in remote places, without internet or if they have it, with many failures.
Pedro Cisneros-Saguilán Thank you for the insightful overview. With regards to the access problem - how is your university attempting to provide access to all students? We have the same problem in South Africa. Devices have been sourced for a few thousand students and we have made data arrangements with the cellphone companies. While this solves some issues, we also have students that live in rural areas during the lockdown and do not have basic necessities such as electricity.
Dear J.T. Janse van Rensburg , I have been using Telegram and WhatsApp groups to communicate with students. By 1st June 2020, I will initiate Facebook Classroom for easy communication and learning because the generation (students) we are engaged with are likely to visit those social networks several times.Me and my students, we have agreed on the same techniques. Also, I have used group email for document exchange. I did small research asking my students what they prefer to be a means of communication, the majority (80%) voted for social networks, LMS (18%), Zoom platform (2%).
Dear J.T. Janse van Rensburg, we really have not tried something like what you have done, our campus is small (1200 students in six educational programs). I emphasized that more than half of my students (65) have problems attending classes online, but those interested are kept in touch by the WhatsApp groups and finally the vast majority (80%) do their homework. All we do is give them tolerance to submit their assignments even if it is out of time; There are also those who, having the necessary means, do not comply. I use Google classroom and Google meet, the platforms give me ability to coordinate Institutional enrollment using an Institution doman and have a lot of interactive features. With them we have advantage of the Google drive, calendar, other google tools.
The Google meet has been doing us good (in an environment with low and fractuating internet connectivity)
