Which method of extraction is preferred for aromatic plants like Cymbopogon? The target of extraction is to acheive highest yield, and maximum chemical constituents, for animal study. We do not intend to extract essential oil, but ethanolic extract, or aqueous, or hydroalcoholic extract. Pls suggest if cold maceration, soxhlet extraction, reflux or any other method is preferrable. The extract is to be used for animal study.

In my humble opinion, If its content is very low and some of its constituents are important , it is better to extract with modern extraction techniques like ultrasonic, microwave or supercritical fluid. Otherwise, the hydro distillation and steam distillation method by the clevenger apparatus does really work well.
As Hamid Reza Farhang says, it is best to extract with non-conventional extraction techniques. I have worked with soxhlet, microwave, subcritical fluids and ultrasound. Of these techniques, the one that gave me the best results and that I took to the biological evaluation was ultrasound-assisted extraction.

many thanks for sharing this very interesting technical question with the RG community. Since you are not interested in the essential oil, I assume that steam distillation is not the method of choice in this case. According to the study cited below, simple extraction using either water, methanol or ethanol is recommended. In this context please have a look at the following article:

The method depends of what you are looking for. However as you said aromatic plant, essential oil extraction by hydrodististillation (Clavenger apparatus orvany other) is good. Since actives molecules are light in C. citratus, temperature should be contrôled and use a good refrigerant

CO2 extraction will be best method for obtaining good quality and quantity of essential oil. Sajida Sumaiya
- Hydro-steam or Stem distillation will be okay for extracting the essential oil from Cymbopogon herbage. Now-a-days, industry is using CO2 extraction methods for maximum recovery of essential oils. For the laboratory scale, hydro distillation using the Clevenger apparatus will also be suitable for distillation.
