The maritime clusters are more geographical in nature with interlinked businesses. I intend to do the comparison based on SWOT analysis. Is there many ways of doing this? if yes, which one is the best and why?
SWOT Analysis is a useful tool for describing the organization`s Strengths and Weaknesses, and for identifying both the Opportunities open to you and the Threats you face.
Please consult the following recent article for your analysis:
Phadermrod, B., Crowder, R. M., & Wills, G. B. (2019). Importance-performance analysis based SWOT analysis. International Journal of Information Management, 44, 194-203.
The method utilized should be selected based on the parameters and objectives you are comparing in your analysis. Others have suggested different methods because they can be more suited to particular comparisons. The SWOT analysis is a simple and broad instrument that will compare a same external environment for the maritime industry (opportunities and threats) with your assessment of the internal setting of each cluster (strengths and weaknesses). If you are inclined to study specifics aspects of the industry, such as market share or competition, you might want to use other instruments, like Porter’s five forces analysis or product portfolio matrix.
Additionally, you can use more than one method in your analysis in order to enhance the arguments.
From the SWOT analysis will allow you to propose the corrective measure to the weakness and threats as a strategy. Additionally the (PESTLE)= Political, Economical, Social Technological,Legal and Environmental analysis will you to go future to formulate your strategy.
This was my first question in Researchgate discussion forums. I must say, I'm amazed to see the responses. Heartiest thanks to all for your insightful comments and suggestions.
The ideas I've got so far are:
- Generic comparison
-IPA (Importance Performance Analysis) based on SWOT (very intriguing, but insufficient data might be a problem in my case)
-Radar chart (suits my cause for now, as time is restricted)
-Porter's five forces analysis (new to me, would be a great addition)
-PESTLE analysis (will try to include in discussion)
It also depends on the approach you are intending to apply using the data you have and how did you measure it. As you are analyzing clusters based on geographical features, if you want to use a quantitative approach I would suggest you to perform a binary logistic regression with four categories to identify which SWOT aspect in more correlated with each cluster. In this sense, you could determine which aspect need to be improved in order to the cluster develop more competitiveness.
As far as I know, SWOT is done in order to work on strategic planning, it is not intended to compare two companies, rather it compares a single company (the one planning) with all it happens outside (threats and Opportunities).
As someone else has already told, if you want to compare just two clusters, I would recommend you to choose the variables that are the most important in that field of business and then just compare both. It´s easier and clearer.
Swot is for a broader purpose, I understand that what you are doing is a comparison.
Gustavo Concari , you are right. I'm just doing a comparison between 2 clusters which I intend to do based on the results of SWOT analysis, including the results from any other suitable methods if available. Thanks for your suggestions :)
