At necropsy, we typically extract it from the longitudinally split femur (or less often sternum). One way is to use a small clean paintbrush dipped in FBS, BSA, or rat serum, scoop up some marrow, and gently paint it across a slide in 3-5 sequential passes so that each one is thinner than the last. Another way is to use a small needle to extract a marrow core and gently make a touch prep on a slide, then use a second slide on top to gently squash the samples (no extra pressure needed) and pull the slides straight out in opposite directions carefully. In either case, air dry the slides for 5 minutes and fix in absolute methanol. Slides should be stained within 3 days.
