When we check the marketing media for Educational institutions it is better to start the target market. Will we go to the families or parents or direct to the students? This changes the options for the marketing media. Families can prefere more classical way. University visits or booklets or brochures but if we target the students social media would be more affective in these digital world.
Yes, as Gonca says, in marketing communications you always start by identifying your target audience (or audiences) and select communication channels that are most used by the target audience. Different audiences may require different communication channels, and the answer to your question may be different in different countries/cultures.
Marketing is important especially in attracting students from abroad. Your alumni acts as brand ambassador . The digital presence of your institute is also very important and significant.
Participating in educational fairs and raod shows is also a good vehicle for marketing.

I will like to suggest that you prepare a matrix based on media richness and media awareness/popularity for your scenario and explore the feasibility of the reach of different types of media including social media (such as Linked In, Facebook etc.). The matrix will help to strategize the use of different media sources.
Matrix can really show the educational institution's situation thanks @deepak chhabra but there must be more to select the most attractive media for them for example you should know your budget, resources etc. then decide which way to go.

The best media strategy is a synergistic mix of various media. It is very important the target that is becoming more global. Some crucial media that I considere crucial are:
1) Institutional web page
2) Presence at fairs and expos
3) Brochures
4) Public relations
5) Professional and scientific pages (e.g. researchgate, linkedin)
I d like to propose that R&D which could improve immediately the core value; advantages of the cloud computing technology; and social network communication in the internet platform would be the most effective method.
