We have use a sonicator for producing deagglomeration of silica fume. May be, it would be useful for your amorphous silica. We have two systems: one of the for small samples (0-50 g) and another one for large samples (500-2000 g)

I attache two papers in which we describe the process for preparing smal samples.

Would assume that you need something like a ball mill to break down something like silica gel. Sonication of Aerosil dispersions would be a much easier task.

If you have enough sample (minimum 500g), the smallest model of Fryma colloid mill is excellent. Incredibly robust & efficient. Recommended.

Finally I bought a colloidal mill Netzsch. It works pretty well.
