What is the basis for nitrogen atmosphere in sintering of aluminum based composites. Does any other inert atmosphere prohibits oxide formation. please provide detailed information.
While sintering, the aluminium composites are readily oxidized to aluminium oxide formed as layer on the on the metallic surface. in order to avoid such type of oxide formation, the sintering is always carried out in any inert atmosphere. Nitrogen and Helium provides instantaneous prohibition to oxide formation.
There is a high chance of some Al-Nitride formation whilst doing the sintering of Al in Nitrogen atmosphere. This amount might be very less and might not be detected by XRD. The formation of nitride might also arrest the sintering of Al to a large degree. The sintering of Al in He atmosphere is an expensive process. An alternate to this could be the usage of Argon medium.
