Depends on your analysis. Generally you model cracks implicitly, using Abaqus/Standard. There is an extension within Abaqus called XFEM which can be used to solve crack propagation problems. If you have complex contact interactions as well in your analysis, you may want to do co-simulation, i.e., have your Abaqus/Standard results feed the Explicit run. Explicit handles complex contact interactions much better.
I just want to add that arc-length control is now at a stage that is sufficient for implicit FE analyses with sharp snapbacks. See the examples in the attached paper.
