LDL (Learner Directed Learning) is the most and current teaching learning activity. In which we can go for blended and flipped methods.
Every child is different. You should study the specific child, so you can see which activities might help her/him. For example, A likes watching videos, so you can utilize videos when you teach. B likes coloring and you can create fun worksheets including coloring and math (additions, multiplications etc).

According to my own experience backward students should have different resources to work in classes ,but aiming at the same objective the rest of the learners have to achieve. In our country public schools have trained personnel to help and work with backward students in the classroom. The students are also given additional time to reinforce after classes and the evaluation process is also adapted regarding their capacities.
The best method should be decided after proper observation by the teacher. But individual differences should be respected and also the student should be taken to the field of his ability, because the word backwardness usually comes after comparison.
But if measures have been taken and no good response, then try to motivate him or discipline him if required. And another method is to set extral lesson for him or you less the work for him; I mean his day to day activities, if required, by increasing his playing hours or game hours. But the games should be inform of education and cognitively structured.
