President Hassan Rouhani and one his advisors initially suggested Tehran could cooperate with Washington on countering IS militants. But senior military, political and religious leaders, including Rouhani, have increasingly criticized Western responses to the crisis and blamed U.S. policies for the emergence of IS. “We are strongly against the interference of the US and others in Iraq’s internal affairs and do not approve of it, because we believe that the Iraqi government, nation and religious authority are capable of ending this sedition and will end it, God willing" Khamenei words.
Iran first supported the Shiite government in Iraq using Elite ground troops from the Revolutionary Guard since 2014 and later on the new Iraqi government. Iran is also using their air force to attack ISIS objectives in Iraq, mainly in areas near the Iran-Iraq borders, first secretly and after December 2014 openly, according to government sources and press information. Before and now Iran is fighting against ISIS with its own military forces and at the same time is assisting Iraq in their fight against the same enemy
Iran's revolutionary guard is officially and unofficially assisting Iraqi national military (predominately Shia) forces and Shia militias. Iran and the US are largely avoiding the other's operations. The US's operations are geared toward Anbar province and the Kurdish Areas, according to this Wall Street Journal article, entitled Iran Backs Iraq Military Campaign to Reclaim Tikrit From Islamic State
Iran was the first nation to openly back the Kurdish and their Peshmerga militias with lethal assistance. This is their best option for a few reasons. First, the Peshmerga have proven to be a capable force against IS. Second, the Kurds are not the primary target of IS rhetoric. As the Shiite Iraqi military is an arm of the enemy of the disenfranchised Sunni population in Iraq, the Kurds are less of a provocation in the region and represent less of a threat to non-beligerent Sunnis. Third, maintaining positive relations with Iraqi Kurds offers an opportunity to prevent future separatist movements among Iranian Kurdish people. Support to Iraqi Kurds speaks to Tehran's tolerance for the greater Kurdistan cultural identity and helps maintain stability among the (estimated) four million Kurds living in northern Iran.
In the first place i dont think Iran has any right intention of helping Iraq in any war for they were deploying volunteers and using the shiate revolutionary guards to humiliate the sunni muslim hence paving way for sunni revival and rise of Islamic State. This means that Iran shall stay away from the situation in Iraq for the good of Iraq and its people
I won't attempt to add to the answers you already have except to comment that public statements often should not be taken at face value. There is apparently a lot of cooperation - or at least parallel activities that each is aware of and implicitly gives a nod to. But there often is a need for public denial. Sometimes political leaders engage in rationalization and denial to themselves. I have no expertise in psychology, but even Morgenthau's Politics Among Nations stresses the way states rationalize the pursuit of national interest through use of ideology. This is also an example of what the philosopher Harry Frankfurt discusses in his fairly recent bestseller with a title that I am not sure I should spell out - "On Bull....."
