Pharmacists can find a niche in the industry, in hospitals, in marketing and in research, all of which ultimately impact health care services. From a country specific perspective, the role of a Pharmacist (in Pakistan) in Industry, Marketing and Research is well recognized. In a majority of hospitals however, the job descriptions or the duties carried out by them are still relegated to management/inventory tasks, much akin to community pharmacy services. So an improvement in needed at the patient care/clinical pharmacy level. However, there are some hospitals that are working relentlessly to improve the situation, so that the pharmacist is involved in Patient Care, TDM, SWOT Analysis, Dose and Drug Interaction Monitering services. The trend is steadily changing. A greater impetus from public awareness campaigns, pharmacists, doctors and hospital managments should fill the gap in much needed holistic patient care.
Zhang Ning this might hold true for some pharmaceutical sectors of the field, primarily community and marketing I think. But there are others, such as research, industries and hospitals where only quality products and services would survive the race of what is the best/most effective. That is why sometimes drug recalls are ordered by FDA even where pharmaceutical giants are concerned. This has happened to several drug markets, for example in instances where 1. adequate Post Marketing Surveillance was not conducted, 2. where the drug was marketed for unapproved indications resulting in the deaths of hundreds of thousands of patients because of unprecedented adverse effects.
Well that is because a drug itself is just part of the treatment. Alot of the other aspects depend upon proper administration, monitoring, stage and type of disease, like you mentioned earlier. And this involves collaborative efforts between the Doctors Pharmacists and the Nurses. The original question by Mr Pravin was about the role of pharmacists though, it would be helpful to get first hand knowledge about what the situation is in China.
