Ion Exchange Resin (IER) is one of the most cost effective methods being used to purify a chemical compounds by removing the undesired impurities . for example Iron Fe(III) is the major impurity in sulphuric acid which comes mainly from the raw materials and storage tanks. Can Iron be removed from 98% concentrated sulphuric acid by using IER?
You may refer to the signalled (European) patent to roughly figure out what might be a feasible practical limit for the concentration of sulfuric acid aimed to be purified from ferric iron by means of a chelating resin; what is clearly not feasible for 98 wt% acid. Sulfuric acid is strong oxidizing agent and iron exists in it with its highest oxidation state i.e. (+3) so you expect Fe(III) in this acid. Now question of its removal from acid needs to be more carefully handling because sulphuric acid is strong acid and most of the common and low cost adsorbents I think might not work appropriately, therefore, carbon based adsorbents may be tried.
