The cellulose acetate membrane which I have, have different faces apparently. One side of this membrane is glossy while the other side of it is matt. I want to use this membrane for vacuum filtration but I don't know which side of it should be on top so I can filter my solution on it?
yes we use the rough side, however, please refer to the manufacturer's instruction once.
I expect glossy side to be selective. Light is scattered more and/or may pass through the pores at the rougher side due to large size-pores. However, light cannot pass through pores and reflected properly when pore size is near or smaller than the light wave length; therefore, that side looks glossy. Then, I suggest you to use glossy, i.e. selective, side of the membrane at the feed side.
