My colorometer (DR/890) only measures maximum of 80 mg/l sulphate concentration. I can still use it with a different reagent for my range of interest but it will not give me an exact value but a range, unfortunately I have to get an exact reading to effectively fulfill my purpose of the experiment. So I would like to know which colometer instrument can be suitable for measuring large sulphate concentrations. Please help.
Sorry but I suspect that the linearity of the determination will be controlled by chemical rather than spectrometric limitations but without further details I cannot be more specific.. If that is not the case then you may be able to find a less sensitive wavelength which is free from interferences or you may be able to use a cell with a much shorter path length (would have to be about 0.5mm or even less).
I assume that you require better precision than could be obtained by diluting the sample.
At the concentration you report a turbidimetric method using barium salts may work
If there are no other sulphur containing compounds in your sample you might think about ICP-OES.
Thank you for your help everyone. Ihave contacted the instrument suppliers and they have given me a way to set it up differently to measure even up to 7000 mg/l which is good news for me. I wonder why they didn't put that procedure/option in their manual though.
If you cannot use another method dilution could be a good way, obviously taking care of it, and considering a wide range of samples in order to decrease the bias...or like partners said before think about another method more accurate.
