I am analyzing the effect of crisis on the news articles of a media outlet affiliated to a non-state actor. My theoretical idea is based on the crisis response strategies of Coombs' (2007) Situational Crisis Communication Theory. Hence, I aim to code each of these strategies (denial, diminishment, rebuilding, bolstering) to identify the dominating frames of predefined time periods.

The options that seem most reasonable to me:

  • Define keywords for each frame category and simply perform keyword search.
  • Define a simple yes-no questionnaire to measure the occurrence of frames.
  • Currently, I would prefer option 1 to avoid interpretative analysis. Can anyone give a recommendation with regard to feasibility in the context of a bachelor thesis? Also, I would happily receive hints for literature that used Coombs' response strategies as frames for analysis, as I have not found any respective paper so far.
