I managed to find a direct reference to biomass only for the determination of the ash content (E1755-01, http://www.astm.org/Standards/E1755.htm). Should I refer to the standards used for wood as regards moisture and volatiles?
Also, does the standard E1755-01 refer to the raw biomass only or to the chars derived from biomass feedstock?
I think you should go to TAPPI standard :). I think that for fibers, pulp, wood etc... the TAPPI standards are more used since are more especific.

You can use ISO standards for moisture (following the weight losses of the material
at 100°C in air : ISO-589-1981), for volatile matter (following the weight losses of the material at 900°C in a non-oxidising atmosphere : ISO-5623-1974), and for ashes (following the weight losses of the material at 815°C in air : ISO-1171-1976).

There are several links, but none allows downloading for free. I had the file from a former post-doc student from mine, who got it from her former institute, etc. Well, I guess that someone had to pay one day ??
