I am looking for laser scanner for 2D measurement of profiles. The cost of the sensor no doubt depends on its specifications. So let's say for FOV < 20 cm, range < 40 cm, resolution < 1000 points.

even regarding your requirements definitions, the answer is still: depends. Primarily on the resolution required...

Now it really depends on your needs: starting with non-laser scanners (not shown: MS Kinect with a PC-interface and some freeware from Faro) that work similar to quite a number of laser-driven sensors, but are not using a laser. Up to laser scanners for 100k+ $$$ :)
The list can be sorted by price, thus you can start around the budget available and see what's available. Don't forget to eventually add the SW cost. Not everything is for free and software really matters regarding the recreation of contours from some 'pixel cloud'.
