Hi, I'm looking for the best free software to display NetCDF raster maps and NetCDF files in general. I've used Panoply and NCView, though they are not very user friendly with regard to zooming options and time series plot over map stacks. Any help will be much appreciated
Hi Lorenzo, I use Rstudio to display the information, with the next comand on terminal (The file .nc contains a single layer, for example, "prec".=)::::::
#First you need to install the next Librarys::::
install.packages(raster) ::::::::
install.packages(ncdf4)
#After that you write on terminal this:::::: require(raster) require(ncdf4)
#select the directory where you have the file.nc
#After that you can write on terminal:::::: precipitation
You have already tried penoply, that in my opinion is the best one to quickly visualize netcdf with a good looking render. NCview is not bad either for quick check but rendering is not so good.
A quick scripted option would be GRADS. However for high quality output NCL might serve you better.
You can use QGIS- a free open source software, if you know GIS software. There is Plugin called Netcdf browser just install it (in plugin) and work on Netcdf data set,. You can also visualize, manipulate the Netcdf data set.

I know that this is not the best answer to your question. But how I was losing too much time to handle netcdf files, I decided to convert to tiff. With the attached Python file, you can make a separate raster *.tif file for each dimension value (time) of your netcdf file.
It all depends on type of datasets which are in netCDF. A very simple choice to work with climate data (in netCDF) is "GRADS". One can perform a good bunch of analysis by using only a few commands without generating separate files.
Panoply is simple as NCView that is having a problem with the last version of the package when I tried last to install it on my new Linux system.
If you do not want to use programming languages as Python or R you can still use Grads, Ferret or QGIS netcdf browser or crayfish plugin.

In SAGA GIS you can open NetCDF, but the Meta Information may be required to Open the Dataset.@Dr. Kamaljit

I think the best option in Python is xarray and Holoviews, however, the problem here is the knowldege about Python syntax.
