After some experience with Debian family (Ubuntu, Lubuntu, Crunchbang, Elementary OS) I wish to explore the Arch world. Since ArchLinux installation is too demanding (the partitioning step in installation) I just installed Manjaro and Antegros (the later seems to be very interesting).
What would you choose: Antegros, Manjaro or ArchBang?
Is the RPM world (Fedora, CentOS) as interesting as ARCH world?
I am using OpenSUSE with Plasma 5 on my workstation and in my experience offers the best stability. In the ArchLinux family I recommend Arch Linux.
IMO, it is almost always a waste of time to worry about which distro. They differ mainly in trivia like desktop decorations, and they all are built from the same basic development tree for fundamental packages like kernel, libc, gcc. After all, the only value added by any particular distro is the set of default versions and configs. Just choose the one whose tools you're comfortable with (mainly the package updater: fwiw, yum and apt are functionally identical.)
Many thanks for your answers. Without doubts Debian is stable (as OpenSUSE, that I have not tested yet). I am looking for a solid and a rolling release distribution. So I came to ArchLinux (which I prefer to Red Hat: Fedora and CentOS)...According to Distrowatch: http://distrowatch.com/ Antegros is 63 th in the ranking of ditributions (Manjaro rank 17). But I preferred Antegros because it uses official Arch repositories (unlike Manjaro) and it's more minimalist.
Although the Linux kernel is the same but differences are there:
1- repositories and package management (pacman seems to be better and faster than apt and yum).
2- Community and wikis (ArchLinux wiki's is great).
3- With Archlinux we learn Linux, with Ubuntu (for example) we learn just Ubuntu.
I have installed Arch linux twice. First when switching to a new laptop (used ubuntu previously for 8 years), then a second time after ruining the HD with a cup of coffee.
I do understand your issue with the partitioning and installation, but my experience is that it is worth it to take the time and read up on everything the first time. The second time the installation took about a quarter of the time that it did the first time. And that included using advanced options to get the most out of the HD hardware which I did not even bother to try to understand the first time. (gdisk is also not that hard to use if you care to read its manual)
If you seriously want to learn linux and want all the benefits from a rolling distribution such as Arch then there is no better option than installing Arch linux, plain and simple. What you learn about the file system when installing will help you keep it running later on. After all a rolling distribution means that it will eventually break somewhere. When that happens you want to know how your system is set up and runs to put it back in shape.
If you however want a system that is easy to install and do not potentially break I suggest not using Arch linux at all. Ubuntu and other distros are probably better options if that is what you are after.
Installing a plain Arch system also keeps you in control on what you install. All that the other arch flavours do is to throw in some extra programs which you can add yourself after having installed the base system.
If you do install Arch linux I recommend installing and learning how to use pacmatic to avoid careless updating of the entire system. That is when your system may break.
Another good tool is yaourt which is a wrapper for pacman which lets you download and install packages from the arch user repositories much easier than doing it manually.
Dear Niclas, Many thanks for your nice answer. Finally I managed to install archlinux on my laptop (with gnome) and on my desktop pc (with kfce). I had to overcome several difficulties: partionning of the hard disk in GPT format with cgdisk (I followed some tutorials).
I managed to install yaourt, texlive, radiotray (to listen online radios) bomi (like vlc for videos) audacious (for audio), cups and its dependencies (for my old canon printer lbp-1120 ), libreoffice, thunderbird, gedit, scid for chess (not yet), skype, qbittorrent, okular and PacmanXG
Yes Carolina, I am happy with my archlinux!
Maybe, I will try Gentoo but not in the near future!
