We know Mott insulator to metal transition (Mott IMT) can be induced by temperature, pressure or electric field.
For the temperature driving Mott insulator resistive switching, such as VxOy (Phys. Rev. B 88, 165424 (2013); J. Mater. Chem., 2011, 21, 5499–5504; Nano Lett., Vol. 9, No 12, 2009, etc.), has a phase change from HRS to LRS, this type resistive switching also can be called Phase Change Transition resistive switching.
Therefore, whether the Mott insulator to metal transition includes phase transition belong to Mott transition or Mott transition includes phase change of switching materials?
Neither. The Mott transition is electronic . The other phase transitions involve free energy - impurities, mass transfer (ions,vacancies) and a lot of electrochemical reactions. The VO type also involves long range interactions and in some cases Jahn-Teller effects. Plus, the switching is a non-thermal equilibrium process, which brings a completely different meaning with Phase transition away from thermal equilibrium.

Depending on your interpretation...... the memory based on Phase Change induced by temperature is a thermal equilibrium, while the resistance transition of VxOy induced by temperature is a non-thermal equilibrium, am I right? And it is inappropriate to say the resistance transition in VxOy which includes phase change (such as above mentioned papers) belong to Mott transition? For VO2, the LRS is Tetragonal (high T), while the HRS is Monoclinic (low T). Both phases of LRS-VO2 and HRS-VO2 are crystalline state (while lattice symmetry is changed), different from the definition/mechanism of Phase Change Memory with LRS is crastalline state and HRS is amorphous state.
