A quick and easy way to get an overall view of recent advancement in a particular field would be to do a medline/Google scholar/webofscience search for review articles. If you search for "obesity AND insulin resistance" and limit it to "reviews", you may find a very recent one on the topic. Or you can look up for WHO website for obesity which may help you find many external links.

What do you mean by 'epidemiological status'? Do you mean the prevalence? If so, I always suggest you start looking at consensus statements from the CDC, American Heart Association and American Diabetes Association. Follow-up with a search for analysis in NHANES (if you are looking for US data, a general search as Primrose suggested if not).
