The 1st course on Cryo Electron Microscopy and 3 Dimensional Image Processing (CEM3DIP) of Macromolecular assemblies and Cellular tomography

 July 2-13, 2016, at IISER Thiruvananthapuram, India.

            The 1st Cryo Electron Microscopy and 3 Dimensional Image Processing (CEM3DIP 2016) school will be held at IISER Thiruvananthapuram (IISER-TVM) in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala, India.  This is an extensive 11 day course that will be held  from 2  July – 13 July 2016 at IISER-TVM   (with a 1 day break, to chill out in the back waters and beaches of God’s Own Country).

            The course will focus on structural biology using Transmission Electron Microscopy and aims to teach the participants the basic principles and practical aspects of Image processing and 3D reconstruction in Single Particle Cryo Electron Microscopy(SPCryoEM) and Cellular Tomography.  This is a hands-on course/workshop, in which theory and practicals are tightly intertwined.  The topics covered suits both who are new to the field as well as those who wants to acquire an in-depth understanding  of  the fundamental principles and practical aspects.  One of the speciality of this course is that, apart from PhD students and Post Docs, even Faculties/PI’s and protein crystallographers who wish to acquire knowledge in SPCryoEM are encouraged to apply.  Student participants may also be able to credit this course.  For more information please contact the course coordinator at [email protected].

            The basic format of the course will be theoretical lectures in the mornings followed by hands on practical session on computer workstations in the afternoon.  Evenings will be reserved for poster presentations by the participants and if possible research talks by the participants/instructors.

The one lab where I can think of the capability to perform Cryo-EM is Dr. Manidipa Banerjee Lab at IIT Delhi (See link bellow). Apart from this in North India, I am not aware of any lab routinely performing cryo-EM. Also, have you already tried negative stain EM? If no, it would be easier to find a working TEM in/near your university and you can collect some negative stain data for single particle of your protein, until you find a Cryo-EM facility to aim higher resolution.

Where can I perform selected area diffraction experiments using Cryo-TEM for pharmaceutical materials? It requires the low dose of the electron beam as well. Kindly let me know if I can perform such experiments in INDIA.

Hello Pramanik, IIT Delhi has a Cyo-EM, they are using it for virus cryo tomography, I don't know it will fulfill yours need, ask Dr Manidipa Banerjee, best wishes
