Self-assembling of nanoparticles has been studied with use of an external force or chemical/surfactant. Imagine that the self-assembly has been formed without an additional surfactant. Then, from where could the attractive force come up, similar to the atomic lattice wherein the outer orbiting electrons see a nucleus attracting it at a far distance? However, as the atom comes nearer to another atom, it realizes that electrons of the other atom are also there and hence the attractive force of the electrons and nuclei and repulsive force of the nuclei or electrons themselves get a balance to form a lattice in all the elements or compounds.
