I've selected an interpretivist philosophy along with a qualitative inductive approach for my research. I plan to employ semi-structured interviews as my primary data collection method. However, I won't be utilizing case study, grounded theory, survey, action research, or narrow inquiry as research strategies. Given this, I'm considering which research strategy aligns best with my chosen philosophical and methodological approach.
As you have discovered, the"'research onion" is very incomplete when it comes to qualitative research. Are you required to refer to it, or can you just ignore it?
Good day if the unique lived experiences of the participants are being studied in your research then phenomenological will fit the research onion. Yes you can utilize the semi- structured interview. Good luck.
Chrisjan JOHN Stegling I would interpret "phenomenological research" as collecting and analyzing data from a phenomenological prospective. There are several methods included in the onion that match such empirical goals, without being consigned to a "philosophical" layer of the onion.
Personally, I'm not convinced that the onion ever served any practical use for qualitative researchers, but at this point it is sadly out of date at best.
Hi Dilki, what I would like to add is that phenomenology has different forms: descriptive, interpretive, transcedental, and the list goes on. Ensure that you are specific about what and whose approach to phenomenology you want to apply in your project.
