My approach is a bit simpler but I often need more help. My friend who helps uses R. He always asks at the beginning what other projects that studied a similar topic, what those papers showed and how much difference. From that, he can work out how big a difference we want to prove and what sample size might be needed. This provides that pre-study statistical background needed. This is very helpful when the actual raw data from other studies is very hard to acquire - such as from contacting the corresponding author.
