I am looking for temperature and precipitation data for Africa between 1950 and 1990 to see if I can find some correlation between the annual white stork breeding success and the annual weather parameters on their wintering grounds between the aforementioned years, but I failed to find any. Does anyone know about such a source?

The above mentioned datasets are fine resources for your purpose. It might be useful to know that CRU data are interpolated values of raw station data, therefore errors, inhomogeneities of the original data might be inherited to the interpolation product....
The latter ones (recommended by Glenn) are reanalysis products therefore those usually thought to have better "quality"...
spatial and temporal resolution might be also useful infos.
Spatial resolution is 2deg for 20CR and 2.5deg for NCEP/NCAR (at the surface).
Available temporal resolution for both: 6-hourly,daily average and monthly

Did you checked GHCN database? Check following site, it might be useful for your purpose.

The GHCN provides data for individual climate stations around the world in an accessible format, which might be all you need. If you need gridded climate data (which it sounds like you might not), then CRU could be a good option and is easier to work with than NCEP. The GHCN data can be useful for assessing how well gridded data sets perform in your region of interest. Not sure if you code in R, but if so, I've got code that pre processes CRU data and extracts values by point locations. Am happy to share if that's useful. Good luck!

You can try GHCN data, it gives a long range of climate data a broad spatial scale: data are available as 5 x 5 gridded cells.

You can download a wide range of climate data for 12 regions of Africa from the following link (http://apps1.eere.energy.gov/buildings/energyplus/cfm/weather_data2.cfm/region=1_africa_wmo_region_1)
and then simply visualize and interpret the data using the Climate Consultant software (free download is available from: http://climate-consultant.software.informer.com/5.4/).
For further regions in the world that have no available data, you can use another software, called Meteonorm (http://meteonorm.com/download/software/), to produce and interpret climate data. However, the demo version of this software is only restricted to 5 regions in the world.
