In the European Union there are currently 33 aquatic pollutants covered under the EU’s Directive on Priority Substances. In 2013 twelve new substances were added on a watch list of emerging pollutants that could be added to it. For the first time, this included (three) pharmaceuticals: 17α-ethinyl estradiol, 17β-estradiol and diclofenac (a painkiller). A report from the EU's Joint Research Centre (JRC) recommended that two further pharmaceuticals should be added namely the antibiotic, erythromycin, and
trichlorfon, which although now banned as a pesticide, is still used as
veterinary pharmaceutical (Carvalho, 2014).
An extensive overview of the Regulation of pharmaceuticals as water pollutants in the EU is included in a 2014 report by the UK based CHEMTrust. See link please.
