Just that you know that, SolRad-Net (Solar Radiation Network) is an established network of ground-based sensors providing high-frequency solar flux measurements in quasi-realtime to the scientific community and various other end users. This network was implemented as a companion to AERONET and its instrumentation are invariably collocated with AERONET sites. The Brazilian core of the present network was developed within the scientific framework of the LBA-ECO component of the Large-Scale Biosphere-Atmosphere Experiment in Amazônia. Historically, SolRad-Net has preferentially selected sites that routinely experience intervals of biomass-burning, such as Amazônia and Sub-Saharan Africa for its long-term monitoring.
NOTICE TO NON-SolRad-Net INVESTIGATORS: To maintain the integrity of the database and fairness to the individuals who have contributed, use of these data for publication requires an offer of authorship to the SolRad-Net PI(s)

I suggest you to use CMSAF data, take a look at www.cmsaf.eu You have to log in (for free) and then you can have access to a wide range of operational products for beam and global irradiation with different kind of coverages and spatial-temporal resolutions.
Be more specific about the area of interest. Not all available datasets cover the world! Moreover, are you looking for a hourly, daily or monthly time step, over that whole period, or just a TMY, or...?
Thank you Dr. Chris. To be specific, I need hourly Direct Normal, Diffuse solar and Global solar radiation for all 36 state capitals in Nigeria, West Africa over a period of 25 years, that is from: 1990 to 2015.
For Nigeria, the only measurements of relatively good quality that are known to exist were those of the Ilorin BSRN station, but they have stopped a long time ago. Everything else is modeled one way or another, but usually based on cloud data from satellite imagery. I don't think all what you ask (hourly data for 25 years) for exists, specially for free. The closest possibilities are:
- NASA SSE (1983-2005 monthly means only, low spatial resolution) https://eosweb.larc.nasa.gov/cgi-bin/sse/
Higher-quality hourly or half-hourly Databases for 1994-2015 do exist at high spatial resolution, but on a commercial basis. Contact me if you're interested.
The updated PVGIS portal is one of the best sources of free data because it covers most of the world, provides both time series and TMY, and is of better quality than older stuff (like Helioclim 3).
Our team have made this type of data freely available via our API, its very easy! Get FREE access to solar radiation data for researchers like yourself via Solcast. Read more at:
We've already had 155 researchers and students from around the world register for FREE Solcast solar radiation data (Normal, Diffuse, Global): https://solcast.com.au/solar-data-api/free-solar-radiation-historical-and-forecasting-data-for-researchers/
can anyone suggest worldwide sources for surface downward longwave in situ or the downward net radiance ? Is there an easy to use visualization interface enabling for multi period averages/summaries?
