You need to have first hand information on stagewise water requirement or alternatively having some baseline information on daily evaporation rate , you can schedule two three option to test with .Please remember , testing these genotypes against terminal drought is most important .
I thinks it highly depends on climate situation and plant species. for example in west of Iran, water deficit in flowering stage is always one of farmers problems thus a plant with resistance in this period is highly accepted. i believe you must choose most important period in plant life cycle for water stress.
When you want to study plants in the short period with stable climate. It is an easy method but not reliable. I prefer assesment of field capicity by TDR that it is not time consuming.
up to my knowledge, withholding irrigation method is the more applicable way to indicate drought tolerant genotypes and genes involved in drought stress mechanism. Withholding irrigation provide a platform for competition among plants to survive from temporary severe drought stress and subsequently recovery evaluation (which more simulate environmental condition in compare to Field Capacity irrigation method). In other hands, this irrigation method is more efficient to study transcriptome.
The yield of drought tolerant genotypes in normal field capicity could be lower than cultivars. Also in field conditions, control of sudden rainfall is impossible. In the WOS and ISI journals, the papers that investigated drought tolerance by withholding irrigation method would not be accepted.
I personally believe that withholding irrigation is for a time that s.o decided to identify the exact genes or genotypes tolerant to drought stress. However, the %FC and %AW is for identifying some genotypes that have high performance during the water deficit stress.
Therefore, it is totally depend on your research field.
