I am currently working on my dissertation. I wanted to do a quantitative study using 3 groups. Two of the groups are approximately the same size, but the third group is significantly smaller. My professor advised me to do a mixed methods study due to the size differences. When do this, would all 3 groups do the survey I have selected? The smaller group would just need interviews as well?
In an explanatory sequential method, you first establish a set of quantitative results, and then use a follow-up qualitative study to improve your understanding of those results, which can be summarized as QUANT --> qual.
I do not see any obvious connection between this design and the situation you described. Instead, if you did surveys for two of the groups and qualitative interviews for the smaller one, that would multi-methods, not mixed methods.

Brandi - David and Laila provide good responses. If you were to pursue a 'mixed' methods discourse then, currently, it would be multi-methods and not mixed methods. All three groups would need to be quant, in this case, and the smaller group interviews would preferably be structured. Personally, I would argue that if you want to keep it more manageable and simple - then pursue all three groups within a single methodology framework.
