When teaching communicatively, we do our best to make classroom more interactive. In the same time we are limited at the end to our pedagogical objectives of the lesson... There is a kind of communication BUT can we consider this communication as a genuine communication similar to the conversations we have outside classroom in our mother tongue???

In my opinion, the communication which is resulted from the use of certain activities, in particular role-play activities, in an EFL classroom can be considered natural.
Communication is communication wherever and however it occurs. We are communicating 24 hours a day even when we are asleep.

I teach Spanish as a foreign language, at College level, and I am an advocate of the communicative approach, within a holistic open framework. Since communication is the goal when learning a language and its cultures, I take advantage of any didactic path -or I adjust it to the specific purpose- that may support the communicative goal, from the most traditional teaching methods to..., let´say, interplay, depending on the personality of a group of students. A successful teaching-learning experience with my students has been the project based method, which offers a more "genuine" learning environment.

Natural communication should have a purpose, an impetus outside of the idea to just practice language use. It's possible to create this kind of dialogue in class but it's rare. Roll play, presentations, rote dialogue- I can't classify these examples as natural. When students make a point about their opinion of the class, or the teacher, or the curriculum in the L2, than it's a great example of natural communication, but often it's not as valued as using target language in a framework.

hi. classroom discourse is a specific kind of conversation based on initiation response and feedback or follow up . in this kind of communication, most of the time , teachers are initiating conversations to teach some points. so they are pedagogical. that is what rarely happens in natural communication. best
It is important to have the depth of understanding basic components of 'communication' {a sender, message, channel/means, and receiver (has the receiver grasp the message correctly)}. So EFL classroom communication tends to be natural communication because the message send by the sender to the receiver is understood clearly through the chosen means/channel. Once this is achieved in communication is very good.
I think communication takes place since it has the elements with sender-channel-receiver-feedback. However, whether it is natural or not, the ELF experts can better advise.

It is different from so called natural communication outside class in the sense that classroom topic is carefully designed in a certain domain. If we are talking about a similar topic in our daily life, we would not care too much about the style of language but the ideas conveyed would be quite similar.
If you incorporate authentic materials into your teaching (e.g. food menus, advertisements etc.) and give your students real-life tasks, what your students perform will be very similar to what they would do in natural conversation. The following book provides great examples and ideas:
