Currently, I m interested in my study for the simulation of solar cell thin film by using SCAPS-1D. I want to know what are the improvements that we 2D and 3D simulation software give us, i.e., what are the disadvantages of 1D software?

OK thank you so much for your suggestion, I already used PC1D, there is some difference between PC1D and SCAPS depends on the nature of the solar cell, but both software are in 1D.

In 2D and 3D simulations you can take into account effects that are relevant in practice but cannot be incorporated in simple 1D models, e.g.
i) surface conductivity near metal contacts on the surface,
ii) grain boundary effects in polycrystalline materials.
Yes, of course, we can't study grain boundary effects in 1D, thank you, Prof. Thomas Walther, for the informations.

The main disadvantage of 1D is: it considers only the variation of thickness but not length and width of the cell.

I completely agree with Md Hasan Ali. I also believe that the difference among 1D, 2D, and 3D is all about the spatial dimension of a cell structure. For 1D simulation packages like AMPS-1D, PC-1D, SCAPS-1D etc simulators for simulating any 2 terminal devices take the device depth (height or thickness) into consideration, while neglecting the other spatial parameters.
I also want to add if a task can be accomplished with 1D, then why moving towards others having more complexities. However, more complex 2D, or 3D simulators will definitely give us opportunity to understand the behaviour of the device more perfectly with many more parameters.
