We observed double peaks in diffraction patterns of some compounds but we did not observe the same thing in other compounds. Any thoughts would be appreciated on perhaps it is the method for obtaining the diffraction patterns and both contributions ht (from Kalpha1 and Kalpha2).
Line broadening due to the analysed material can mask the alpha1-alpha2 splitting in the sense of a convolution.
The simple and efficient way is to use some Ge or Si monochromatic crystals with 2-bounce or 4-bounce reflections after the X-ray source.
Energy resolution in this case, source of the spliting, depend of the optics and crystalits sizes and strutural qualities. If you grind more, say, crystalites size smaller then one micrometer, the diffraction curve will broaden and the spliting will disapere. Also, some compound will produce crystalites of better structural quality than others.
It depends only from the microstructural differences of the analyzed samples. If you are using a non monochromatic wavelenght all of your diffraction peaks should present the a1-a2 splitting. In general, the splitting is more evident at high angle and with samples with large particle sizes, when a small FWHM is expected and it is more simple to see the splitting a1-a2
